Who Else In Houston Wants To Keep Mosquitoes Out Of Their Yard This Summer?

Nobody likes mosquitoes. If you live in Houston, you are likely not surprised to find that we are one of the worst cities in the U.S. when it comes to mosquitoes. The yellow fever mosquito, Asian tiger mosquito, house mosquitoes, and the common malaria mosquitoes are just some of the mosquitoes found in Houston.

While it can be difficult to distinguish between various mosquito species, know that all mosquitoes are dangerous. In fact, mosquitoes are considered to be one of the most dangerous insects on the planet. This is because female mosquitoes bite humans to consume blood, which provides the proteins they need to produce eggs. These bites can cause irritation and swelling, but they can also transmit harmful and potentially fatal diseases, including malaria, yellow fever, West Nile Virus, and dengue fever. Bites from mosquitoes can also cause severe allergic reactions to some people and may even cause death.

How Do You Keep Mosquitoes Out Of Your Houston Yard This Summer?

Without professional help, keeping mosquitoes out of your yard can be tricky. There are a lot of “suggestions” that will provide a temporary fix. Citronella candles, bug zappers, and fans are some DIY methods for mosquito control. There are plenty of mosquito repellents on the market too, but it’s important to know that not only do these usually smell awful, but they can also cause allergic reactions to some people.

Furthermore, these deterrents may keep some mosquitoes away, but they will not reduce your overall mosquito population. If you are going to try and minimize the mosquito population in your Houston yard this summer, here are some things you can do:

1. Keep your yard clean. Trash can attract mosquitoes. Keep trash bags sealed and keep a lid on your trash cans. Keep trash picked up from the yard.

2. Mow your lawn and remove weeds. Mosquitoes will be more abundant when there are tall grass and weeds around. Keep wet leaves off the ground.

3. Eliminate stagnant water sources. Mosquitoes need water to lay their eggs. They don’t need much at all. Even a stray soda cap can provide enough water for mosquitoes. Keep pools treated and covered when not in use, keep toys picked up, and look for areas in the yard where rainwater has a tendency to build up. Don’t leave cups and other dishes in your yard.

4. Keep gutters clean and free of debris. Keep leaves and debris out of your gutters. Leaves can cause moisture build-up that attracts mosquitoes to your yard.

5. Avoid unnecessary moisture inside of your home. Mosquitoes can get inside your house once they are in your yard. Once present, they will thrive inside. They are attracted to dark, damp places like under sinks, around leaking pipes, and even in your bathroom. Do your best to maintain a dry, less humid environment. This will keep your home less inviting.
