How To Get Rid Of Termites: A Comprehensive Guide For Sugarland Homeowners

Many people underestimate the amount of damage that termites can cause. These little insects are usually less than half an inch long. However, their small size is more of a benefit to them than a hindrance. They are able to invade your home without being detected, which means that you could already have a substantial amount of damage to your home before you even realize that the termites are there.

At Modern Pest Control, we understand the importance of tackling a termite problem quickly. Our Sugar Land pest control technicians have been dealing with the termites in this area for years. Here is a look at everything that you need to know about eradicating a termite infestation.

About The Termite Caste System

Many termite species in Sugar Land live in large colonies that can contain over 100,000 termites in one nest. With numbers this high, every termite has a job to do to ensure that the colony is able to stay organized and run like a well-oiled machine.

When termites reach adulthood, they will go into one of three caste systems, which include:

  • Reproductives: Reproductive termites are the only termites that can see. They are also larger than other termites in their colony and have two sets of small wings on their backs. When they reach full maturity, these flying termites will leave their nest to go look for a mate and a new place to live. When two reproductive termites mate, they become the king and queen of their new colony.

  • Soldiers: Most soldier termites don't have eyes. However, even though they are completely blind, they are still able to defend their colony. Their large mandibles allow them to grab ahold of their enemies.

  • Workers: The worker termites are arguably one of the most important members of the colony. They are in charge of feeding the young termites, caring for the queen and king, building the nest, and foraging for food.

Some termite colonies don't have a worker caste. The drywood termites and dampwood termites make the young termites do all of the work until they reach adulthood.

How To Identify Signs Of Termite Damage

Some termite damage is easy to identify. However, there are a few subtle signs of termites that may not seem like termites caused them. For example, termites can eat away at your window and door frames which can cause them to warp. If you notice that your windows are suddenly sticking or difficult to close,  it could mean your house has termites.

Other signs of termites could include blistered wood, buckling floorboards, hollow wood, and small holes in your drywall. While it usually takes years before your home will sustain structural damage from termites, even the smallest amount of damage can be costly to repair.

Causes And Factors For Termite Infestations

Termites like to build their colonies in warm and wet conditions. Most termites can only survive for 48 hours without water, so they want to build their nest near a reliable water source. In order to prevent termites from taking over your property, you need to ensure that you don't have water buildup around your home. Check your gutter systems and install a long downspout to be sure that water is being properly diverted away from your house.
